A photography book in search of the deeper stories that lie beneath the surface
To promote SOCIAL VISIBILITY with the Indigenous people of Costa Rica
What is this project about
A beautiful book of black & white photographs compiled with the
Indigenous communities in Grano de Oro, Cöen, Boca Cöen, Tsipirí and
Kokötei in Costa Rica accompanied with the writings of Victoria Fontan
and Melanie L. Wells-Alvarado (Shobhana). At the bequest of these
communities, this project strives to give social and cultural visibility
to some communities that feel that they have been left at the margins
of Costa Rican society.
This project is the result of a communal
dialogue that started in 1996. It horizontally connects people and works
as a process whereby outsiders, Victoria and Melanie, come in as
facilitators and connectors. They are not the story.
This project would come to life with photographs taken in previous
years, with photographs to be taken during the trips in the months of
May-June 2014 and with the musings and journalistic writings that have
and will come from those journeys.
