MOVIES FILMED in Costa Rica

Coming to Costa Rica for a visit?
Missing Costa Rica?
Check out some of these movies that had scenes filmed in Costa Rica!

(Do you know of any other movies that were either filmed in - or about Costa Rica, please e- the info on them to me at
LivingLifeInCostaRica@gmail.com

"After Earth"
After a crash landing, a father and son explore a planet that was evacuated by humans 1,000 years earlier. It's Will Smith's newest movie to be released June 7, 2013
(some of it was shot in the Arenal area I believe)

The Return (El regreso)

A native Costa Rican comes home for a visit after living in the US for several years – in reality and on film.  "The movie is entertaining, heart warming, easy to watch and thought provoking. It's a great insight into life in San José, and the way of the "Tico", but still dealing with many regional and universal topics. It's truly refreshing to see Latin American films that DON'T focus on extreme poverty, drug addiction, corruption, homosexuality, crime, etc., in order to be artistic or indie."  In Spanish (but I'm REALLY curious to see it after seeing the trailer)

We Are Angels (1996)???

It's a Jungle Out There
An Independent Film in Costa Rica (2004) (TV)

1492 - The Conquest of Paradise - 1992
Directed by Ridley Scott, staring Gérard Depardieu and Sigourney Weaver among others, 1492 is about Columbus' discovery of the Americas. Personally, I don't love it or hate it.

APOCALYPTO

Mel Gibson's (UGH!!!!) controversial Oscar nominated film Apocalypto is about the fall of the Mayan empire. An interesting fantasy. The story was oversimplified but perhaps anything deeper would have been difficult to cover in a 2 hour movie. Love the twist at the end, think it speaks to human nature in general.
(you can watch the WHOLE movie in this link!)

BASIC
An action movie with John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson (LOVE him) and plenty of other big name stars. Previews seems like Samuel L. Jackson does what he does best, playing a bad ass. While John Travolta chases him around the jungle.

THE BLUE BUTTERFLY
A terminally ill 10-year-old child has one last dream – to capture the most beautiful butterfly in the world, the luminescent and elusive blue morpho. William Hurt plays the renowned entomologist who, persuaded by the boy's mother, goes into the jungle with him, for "an adventure that will transform their lives". Based on a true story, the film features amazing outdoor photography in the jungles of Costa Rica. Released in 2004: directed by Lea Pool.
The trip takes the two deep into the rainforest.

CARIBE
A real Costa Rican movie (and the first ever Costa Rican film to be submitted to the Academy Awards), this film is based on the Limon Province on the Caribbean coast. It's about a love triangle between a banana plantation owner and 2 women. The movie touches on political topics including off shore oil drilling.  It explores "Passion: of people for the land and sea, of corporations for riches, and of men and women for each other."

CARNIVAL IN COSTA RICA

From 1947, Carnival in Costa Rica is about 2 pairs of lovers who try to avoid an arranged marriage during Carnival in Costa Rica. Haven't seen it, but want too, seems like the singing, dancing and costumes might be fun.

THE CELESTINE PROPHECY
The film claims to take place in Peru BUT it was filmed in Costa Rica. The movies is based on the life changing book.  An adaptation of James Redfield's novel about the search for a sacred manuscript in the Peruvian Rain Forest

THE CHOSEN ONE
A man finally finds faith in himself after the rest of world puts its faith in him; the sole being on earth who can save mankind from its own destruction.
Scenes were shot at Los Chorros Waterfall, in Grecia, and Arenal Ecology Tropical Park in La Fortuna.
Click onto this link above and watch 1 or 12 parts of it to see this movie

CONGO
In this 1995 film (another from a book by Michael Crichton), Laura Linney and Tim Curry play members of an expedition to the African Congo. Starring as the African Congo - Costa Rica. The film includes scenes of not just one but two of our volcanoes – Arenal and Irazu.

COSTA RICAN SUMMER
A titillating teen comedy, a young surfer and his friends head to Costa Rica to save his beautiful aunt's beach motel, resurrect an old surf champion and find enough waves and women to make for a totally tasty time.

ENDLESS SUMMER II

Bruce Brown, king of surfing documentaries, returns after nearly 30 years to trace the steps of 2 young surfers to top surfing spots around the world. Along the way we see many of the people and locales Bruce visited during the filming of Endless Summer (1966)
(this is the Costa Rica "Witches Rock" scene but you can watch the whole movie by pressing each of the 11 videos)

GESTATION
Gestation is a wonderful movie (in Spanish) that captured some of the soul of Costa Rica. The look, the language, the feel were pure Tico. Teenage pregnancy is a common theme, but it was handled deftly in this movie addressing many of the complications from economic disparity to religion to family and social impact. The movie is very sweet and has real heart.
Here's a GREAT description of it in English:

JURASSIC PARK
(and The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III)
During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaur exhibits to run amok. Dinosaurs running wild! Jeff Goldblum being terrified! Sam Neill saving the day! This franchise, which began as a Spielburg-directed project in 1993, has kept people riveted to their seats ever since. While the filming for Jurassic Park was done in Hawaii, the story itself is set on an island off the coast of Costa Rica.

MONSTERS
After a NASA deep-space probe crash lands in Mexico, alien life forms spread throughout the U.S.–Mexico border region, leading to the quarantine of the northern half of Mexico. Mexican and United States troops battle to contain the creatures, while a wall stretching along the American border ostensibly keeps the United States protected.  More description at:
